Robert August DeMatteis, born in Kearny, New Jersey, March 29th 1934 passed away in Danville, CA on July 1st , after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Robert, came out with his family to Visalia from New Jersey during his Sophomore year of High School and graduated from Visalia High in 1951 where he played the Saxophone and met his wife and best friends who remained very close up to today. Robert and his deceased wife, Janet Swisher DeMatteis settled in Porterville in 1967 and raised their daughter Lori. Robert a graduate of UCSF School of Pharmacy 1957- started his career in Retail Pharmacy. He also loved his clinical work and his patients at Porterville State Hospital where he retired after 36 years-spanning a 50-year pharmaceutical career. Robert always said that working at the hospital allowed him to couple both the scientific nature of Pharmacy with his love of people. Robert an avid reader was a former president and active member in the Friends of the Library up until he moved to be closer to his daughter. Robert loved kids and was a former Boy Scout Master as well. While he moved to be nearer to his daughter and son-in-law Lawrence Levy and his super daughter Eleonor Cabanting who became part of the family after caring for his wife until she passed, his heart remained in Porterville and he loved coming home to work in the yard with his oak trees, visit with everyone and have a stop at the library. Robert also leaves behind two stepsons Matthew of San Francisco, Andrew of New York City, two sisters and their husbands Jeanine Makely (Allen), Danville and Elaine Davis (Robert) of Los Angeles and his nieces and great nephew along with their respective families. Visitation will take place on July 14th Porterville Funeral Center, from 3pm to 7pm with his burial on July 15th 9am, Frazier Valley Cemetery. Remembrance Service will be held immediately following the burial at the Porterville Funeral & Cremation Center. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy be made to the Porterville Friends of the Library or Porterville Toys for Tots- please make sure when you donate online to specify Porterville California to ensure that all donations stay in the local community.
